The Dollmakers
24th October 2024
I picked this book up following the recommendation of another author I regularly read. It’s a fantasy story set in a world of subtle magics, which in the country we visit is manifested in the form of dolls, magical androids built to delight and serve, or to defend.
We meet a character who I immediately didn’t like. I think that was the most off putting part of the story really, as I prefer to be aligned primarily with a character I can empathise with, and didn’t particularly find that the case here.
The plot is clever though, and I enjoyed seeing as secrets were revealed, changes unfolded, and secondary characters weaved through the story.
I don’t know whether I’d pick up a sequel - it’s not going to leap to the top of my list, but I might check it out if there is one.
