My latest purchase in the cosy crime with a unique take genre is this, in which we find ourself meeting the estranged former apprentice of a deceased antique hunter. Write what you know is the classic advice, and the author’s status as a child of famous antique experts seems to provide an excellent in.

The setup is good, lots of intrigue, lots of people to meet, and a clever mechanism for aligning the reader with the main character while reintroducing her to the world.

But later on I felt like the plot lost itself in too many knots - there were perhaps too many red herrings and too many different things going on to follow everything properly.

I’ve seen that there’s a sequel coming, but I think I might sit that out.
