The news is today full of stuff about the lovable Lib Dem leader Charles Kennedy.

I am quite shocked at the 25 MPs who signed a petition demanding he resign as leader or they would not sit on his front bench. He had already called a leadership contest so there is absolutely no need for this action. Yes, he had said he would stand, and if the party were going to run a fair campaign then the party members would choose the leader they wanted - what the MPs want is not necessarily the right thing to have.

Liberal Democrat MPs are not elected by Liberal Democrats, they could be elected by anyone, and I don't think they should have the responsibility of selecting a leader for the whole party. If the members don't want Charles Kennedy it should be them who make that decision in a fair leadership contest.

I also find it particularly nasty of the Liberal Democrats to deliver this ultimatum on a man who has just admitted that he has had a drinking problem and that he is getting over it. What is more likely to push him back into drink that being told by your colleagues and friends that they want you out?

There was nothing liberal or democratic about this demand for resignation.
