The BBC today reports that Dame Stella Rimington is saying ID cards won't stop terror.

Well, I agree. Terrorists do have ID. Suicide bombers usually only offend the once, and so their record of being a suicide bomber wouldn't appear on their ID card.

However, what I actually find rather rude, is the comment from Downing Street: "Dame Stella is a private individual who was entitled to her views".

Admittedly that is true but she probably knows more about terrorism as former head of MI5 than anyone in the cabinet. Why is it that people are no longer willing to listen to experts. Actually, I suppose they never were. Gallileo for example wasn't believed. Now doctors aren't believed (see Ash's blog), scientists still aren't believed (eg evolution), and even former heads of MI5.

God, that'll be scary for any of my descendants (actually, me having descendants is a much scarier thought)

On the other hand, having ID cards and an extensive national database would making tracing family trees far far easier.
