...so holy | 2nd May 2006, 11:57
"This event seems so big and so important, in some sort of way so holy,"

The above quote is from a member of the American public, refering to David Blaine spending a week under water in his ball. (as quoted on the Beeb.

Compare with when he attempted to sit in a box in London... after which he was voted 'Biggest Loser of 2003'.

Holy? To the BatOED...

'1. Kept or regarded as inviolate from ordinary use' - hmm... well we don't ordinarily use large balls of water.

'2. Of a character that evokes human veneration and reverence' - reverence? Ridicule perhaps.

'3a. Specially belonging to, commissioned by, or devoted to God'

'3b. Having their origin or sanction from God'

'4. Entirely devoted to God'

Hmmmmmm...

I think you missed off some of the better quotes from that article:

"He's got this great amount of presence like he carries something so great within him."

"He's like a god in a mortal body," added Hector Rodriguez. "I think he's just showing everyone there's nothing that man cannot do. He can do everything and anything."

I don't think it is necessary to quote the OED on this one, they probably know what the word 'holy' means. It's apt that this is being filmed in New York, rather than in London; over in 'Jesusland', everyone’s a hero and people are only too eager to praise somebody, no matter how unimportant or stupid they may be. David Blaine is a mediocre magician who somehow lures people in with his spaced-out style of performance and disjointed murmurings.

Incidentally, regarding the "Blaine will attempt to break the world record by holding his breath for nine minutes whilst trying to escape from heavy chains." claim. Mark Harris of the British Free Diving Association recently said that Blaine would have an unfair advantage as he is breathing compressed air which would increase his blood oxygen concentration. I doubt it would be classified as a valid ‘world record’; it’s hardly fair to group him in with free divers who actually commit human feats of endurance for sport.

Move along now, nothing to see here.

I must say I don't see the big deal about this at all. Apart from being in a ball of warm water, he still has oxygen and 'feeding tubes' to sustain him - much more than professional free-divers do, not to mention the fact that the pros do it in extremely cold water.

For his sake I'm glad he is not in London. Over there in America they'll lap this sort of thing up, and love him for it. Here, someone would either break the ball, or set it rolling off somewhere. And rightfully so, might I add.
