Today, I have been to visit my dentist... Herr Schmidt.

I saw him a couple of weeks ago at the start of the Easter break, and he told me that two of my teeth would need fillings, and that he thought I should visit their hygienist. The lovely man then told me he would rather treat me privately than on the NHS. He handed me a quote for just over ?300.

?82 of that was for an hour with the hygienist. Lovely work if you can get it - that works out at ?150,000 per annum, just about.

So anyway, having demanded NHS treatment (?28) and said I wasn't having the hygienist, I went back today for my fillings. I don't think he appreciated me going NHS though, he was particularly vicious with the anaesthetic - I'm sure he really didn't need to jab me seven times with it.

Also, I find the chair particularly uncomfortable. Especially the way he tilts it so that my feet are slightly above my head (I assume so that the blood rushes to my head and spurts out in his face when he misses). This means that all the saliva and other liquids that gather in my mouth whilst he is creating a his sculpture runs right to the back of my throat. Just to help, every single dental nurse seems to have been off on the day they train them to use the little vacuum suckage nozzle - they always go for the front of the tongue, rather than the back of the mouth where the liquid pools.

Now I just need to wait for my jaw to stop aching where he stabbed it, and my tongue to stop aching where I have chewed on it whilst numb.

You make it all sound so dramatic... They usually inject the gum in numerous places to ensure the anæsthetic works through the area of action. I can say from the experience of oping not to have the injections for two fillings, that it is worth while. I actually quite like going to the dentist, in fact I have an appointment on the 4th. I'm going to quiz her about becoming one, as that is my latest career plan...
