Two armies, one sword | 26th March 2006, 19:04
I've been reading the BBC again, and came across the linked to article, wherein Geoff Hoon, the Leader of the House of Commons, demands that the House of Lords give way to the will of the House of Commons regarding ID Cards.

In particular he says "it's ... a convention of the constitution, that once a government puts into its manifesto a particular proposal, then the House of Lords would not stand in the way of that proposal becoming law."

Meanwhile the argument of the House of Lords is that Labour's manifesto said that ID cards would not be compulsory, and by forcing passport applicants to have ID cards, the government is making them compulsory "by stealth". (Not particularly stealthily if you ask me).

So this is a case of two armies (The Commons vs. The Lords) using the same sword (the Labour Manifesto). Not a particularly sound way to wage a battle. However, to keep the metaphor alive, if either were to drop the sword, the other would swipe.

A rather colourful analogy you've got going there Mr Jim... I for one am happy that we have the Lords. It stops bollocks legislation like these ID cards from slipping through unnoticed and gives a level of stability to the system, rather then just being about 'trendy' policies.

ID cards will possibly be one of the biggest wastes of money the current government has attempted. If we are not forced to carry them, then those who don't want to be identified won't, and if they want to have identities they will be easily forged. I'm not one to whinge about the 'erosion of privacy', I actually quite like the CCTV culture we have in the UK. What the government wants from these cards, and what will be achieved don't seem to match. They might as well catalogue the population and genetically profile us all. I'm sure that day will come (V for Vendetta anyone?).

As for the cards, why don’t we test if the Lords truly act in the interest of the public and hold a referendum on the motion? Perhaps the government fears they might not like the result.

Aha! A compromise has been reached. No forcing us to have ID cards, just putting our details in their big computer database that can be broken into!

(ID cards still happen, but we can opt out)

No forcing us to have ID cards ... until 2010.

Well, today Clarke has said that Labour will try to make them compulsory if they win the next election. But that's still undecided.
