"Islam is a religion of peace, tolerance, kindness and integrity. That is why we have told him if he regrets what he did, then we will forgive him" said the judge in the trial of an Afghan man accused of converting to Christianity (from this BBC article).
No it seems to me that there are a few words missing to make this quote make sense. Perhaps something to do with conditionality.
Peace? Well, he is at risk of being sentenced to death by hanging. Whether this breaches the definition of peace I don't know, but it certainly doesn't seem to be a very kind thing to do.
Tolerance? Well no. Let's look at the definition of the word, courtesy of the OED. "The action or practice of tolerating; toleration; the disposition to be patient with or indulgent to the opinions or practices of others; freedom from bigotry or undue severity in judging the conduct of others; forbearance; catholicity of spirit."
So, being "indulgent to the opinions or practices of others" eh? Like with regards to their religion? Perhaps this was a bad choice of word, afterall, English probably isn't the judge's first language.
Integrity. Interesting choice again - what relevance does this word have... I don't see it, so a definition please Mr. OED...
"Soundness of moral principle; the character of uncorrupted virtue, esp. in relation to truth and fair dealing; uprightness, honesty, sincerity."
Aha - so they are adhereant to their morals and beliefs. Well, I suppose that is fair - if indeed, as many believe, Islamic Law requires this man to be put to death, they will have to do so to maintain integrity.
This all leads to a troublesome issue - these four words do not appear to go hand in hand. And with the rest of the world watching, it will be interesting to see how diplomatically the Afghan people can deal with this.
Of course, there is always the question of why the chap headed back to Afghanistan when he knew full well that he had broken Islamic Law.
In addition, the court is now examining his mental state, and I have read suggestions that he may be ruled mentally unfit because he will not renounce Christianity and return to Islam. So now it is crazy to prefer to die rather then give up your religious beliefs... but hang on... aren't suicide bombers dying to make a point about not wanting to give up their religion and culture? (Yes okay, many people will view them as crazy too, but I'm trying to say that they wouldn't view a Muslim as mad if he chose death over rejecting Islam for some other religion).

The plot thickens... His family are still pushing the mental insanity claim, but to be fair one would have to be insane to believe in any religion; but also they are not even sure if he is even an Afghan citizen... 0_o
