I could have just committed two thefts.

The fact is that I didn't, however I could have if I had wanted to.

I've spent part of this morning in Crawley shopping at the County Mall, where I have been trying on suits. Having one in the bag, I carried said bag back to the car via several other shops.

The first of these shops was Boots. I almost didn't notice that the alarm sounded as I entered - certainly no one else did. After purchasing three bars of soap, I headed out the same doors, and set off the alarms once again. No one noticed. No security, no staff, no one at all. So, that was potential theft number one.

I then entered WHSmith, setting off the alarms again with my suit (which clearly they had failed to de-tag somewhere (probably the trousers or the shirt). The woman who was entering at the same time noticed, but I think she thought it was her. No staff or security seemed to care that their alarm was sounding.

And again as I left WHSmith they sounded again. I stopped this time, along with a gentleman who was leaving at the same time, and we looked around for a moment... no one came. So, that was potential theft number two.

So all in all a pretty sad state for these shops who don't give a monkey's that their alarms are sounding. No wonder shoplifting is so common! (on an aside, I read the other day that Discworld novels are the most shoplifted books, although Harry Potter novels are the best sellers).

I have to say that I too am particularly honest. But for some reason, whenever I walk into Game in Kidderminster I manage to set the alarm off. They seem to care more in there than in the shops you visited and tend to search me; but usually after a few seconds they just look confused and I leave, alarms sounding, and get a few stares from people walking past.

I think shop alarms are about as useful as car alarms or house alarms. Apart from deafen the intruder, what is a house alarm going to achieve if it isn't hooked up to a police-callout? There isn't much the humble public can do other than get aggravated. Car alarms are the same; I've actually seen people driving around in cars with the alarm on - nothing much I can do about that though. 0_o I tend not to like car alarms especially, as my Mum always had the habit of dead-locking me in the car with the motion sensor on... *few minutes later* EEOOWEEOWWW...

Erm... ive been told a few stories about Halfords... people taking a screwdriver in, having the time to unscrew and remove a stereo and calmly walking out of the shop!!! I feel by far the best one is a customer walking in, trekking up three flights of stairs, removing a bike off a stand and wheeling it out of the shop totally unquestioned! I can see it now! 'Errr where has that £900 kona gone?'
