Two armies, one sword | 26th March 2006, 19:04
I've been reading the BBC again, and came across the linked to article, wherein Geoff Hoon, the Leader of the House of Commons, demands that the House of Lords give way to the will of the House of Commons regarding ID Cards.

In particular he says "it's ... a convention of the constitution, that once a government puts into its manifesto a particular proposal, then the House of Lords would not stand in the way of that proposal becoming law."

Meanwhile the argument of the House of Lords is that Labour's manifesto said that ID cards would not be compulsory, and by forcing passport applicants to have ID cards, the government is making them compulsory "by stealth". (Not particularly stealthily if you ask me).

So this is a case of two armies (The Commons vs. The Lords) using the same sword (the Labour Manifesto). Not a particularly sound way to wage a battle. However, to keep the metaphor alive, if either were to drop the sword, the other would swipe.
