"A greater proportion of those in the lower sets for mathematics, for example, preferred mixed-ability classes compared with those in the middle or top sets.

This was reversed when they were asked about setting, with 79% of pupils in the highest sets preferring setting, 67% of those in the middle sets, and 44% of those in the lowest sets."

... says this BBC News item.

I'm confused by the words 'this was reversed', as I can't spot the reversal.

To help me, I am going to disect the two statements.

Statement 1

More lower set people liked mixed-ability classes.
Fewer middle and higher set people liked mixed-ability classes.

Statement 2

More higher set people liked setting.
Fewer middle set people liked setting.
Even fewer lower set people liked setting.

No, these statements seem the same to me.

The only thing I can think of is that they mean 'When we asked the oposite question, people gave the oposite response.' This would be the same as asking 'Is chocolate your favourite flavour of ice cream', and getting a 'Yes', and then asking 'Is strawberry your favourite flavour of ice cream', and getting a 'No', and then claiming the response was reversed, when really, you are getting the same response.

Please note, other flavours of ice cream may be available.

I don't have a comment on that, but I do have a comment about the WGA yearbook. Did you ever join the WGA? I received my yearbook this morning (other yearbooks probably aren't available for Warwick, actually) and there's a James Johnson who lives in Haywards Heath.....but he's a psychology graduate! And his middle name is Edward, so it's not you. How bizarre.

How odd... I knew there was a James E. doing Psychology, as Warwick TV used to send him my emails in the first year, but I had no idea we shared a hometown as well :S Unless of course the university got it all wrong...
